S&S is NOT Space Opera... not even close.
It's class & level, rules-light, pseudo-trek.
Class provides a +1 on certain tasks, and sets what gets you XP. Level determines how much gear you get, and leveling up raises an attribute by 1. 8 attributes; only 4 of them can be raised. 3 classes, all have optional subclasses. No skills/talents/feats equivalents. Psionic abilities bought with Psi-Stat. Simple ship combat system, fairly elegant, especially for the era. No design system. 5 Confed classes presented: Frieghter, Destroyer, Cruiser, Battlecruiser, Dreadnought. Crew ranges from 10 to 100. NPC's following orders requires leadership check.
Plays well, doesn't stick terribly close to trek (there are LiS, Buck Rogers, and other SF TV references in the encounters).
The related boardgame, Star Explorer, is not fully compatible, but does serve nicely as a mission generator!

Excellent review! Thanks! Allen My pleasure. It's a good game. Good, not great, mind you, but it holds up well 30 years later.

I only played Space Opera a few times, but I still use it as a reference to steal ideas from. I always liked the the species, planetary types and equipment section. For some reason, when my friends and I made characters back in the 80s, a coagulator was a must have weapon.
