www.diffworlds.com/dw_01-12.htmLooks like Kanterman wrote five different articles for Different Worlds: “Where No Man Has Gone Before” in Issue #1 “ Starships & Spacemen Expansion Kit” in Issue #2 “ Gangster! An Overview” in Issue #6 “Review/Scenario: Alien and Starships & Spacemen” in Issue #8 “Book Review: Role-Playing in the Land of Xanth” in Issue #13 I wonder what “Where No Man Has Gone Before” is all about. The Expansion Kit sounds interesting. Apparently you can still buy a copy!

He also did an article for Space Gamer called “Starships and Spacemen: Designer’s Notes” which sounds like it would be worthwhile tracking down.

I wish that Different Worlds and The Space Gamer would put out DVD sets with PDF copies of the old magazines the same way that Dragon and White Dwarf did. I think that some of those old resources are so much better than the bulk of the stuff being cranked out today and would love to have copies to read through. Awesome stuff!
This is particularly tough for a new gamer trying to get into the hobby today. I was around then and didn't collect them, so I have no one but myself to blame, but newcomers can't get this stuff without having to put up a second mortgage on their house... :-)

He also did a board game called Star Explorer. Here is an interesting thread on BGG—it’s a review and then discussion in which Dr. Kanterman himself chimes in! Hmm, I should try tracking him down to join this board! (Maybe once we have a little more content.)

I have many of the issues of The Space Gamer and Different Worlds that included articles on "Star Trek" and "Starships and Spacemen". I definitely have the following articles: TSG #18 - Richard Bartucci's review of S&S TSG #20 - Dr. Kanterman's rebuttal and designer notes DW #2 - Dr. Kanterman's S&S Expansion Kit (2 page errata and addenda) They're a nice addition and behind the scenes glimpse at the game and of the times. I'll see what I can do about making them available to those who are interested. I've never been able to get ahold of DW #1 so I don't know any specifics about the article there, but based on the timing I'm sure it was an introduction to S&S. Apparently Tadashi has mentioned in the past few years that he might make PDFs of DW on CD available, but it's been a long time since I've seen an update to this. I too would dearly love that. EDIT: Oh and btw, Star Explorer is a GREAT game! And you know what? You can still get it!! I guess Scott from FGU has a garage full of stuff from the golden age, and the boxed set of Star Explorer is one of them. $15 plus shipping. Got mine about a year and a half ago, and it was shrinkwrapped and looked as new as it did back in the day.

Speaking of old magazines and Star Trek, this might be a good place to mention White Dwarf #18 (April/May 1980) that included the article "Star Trek- The Motion Picture: Miniature Rules and Scenarios" by Tony Yates and Steve Jackson (GW Steve Jackson, not GURPS SJ). I did a post about it on my blog last year. Even with this forum I hadn't thought about it, but I should probably create a new post about it in Game Systems for the sake of completeness.

SE is a great "Trek-like" mission generator.

Hey, welcome, aramis! Great to have you! Writing a comprehensive review of S&S is my next project. It will be great to have someone around who has familiarity with it. (Doc has played it too, but unfortunately for some reason he has not registered an account here.)

TSG #18 - Richard Bartucci's review of S&S TSG #20 - Dr. Kanterman's rebuttal and designer notes DW #2 - Dr. Kanterman's S&S Expansion Kit (2 page errata and addenda) I have assembled the articles above into a single download, the " Starships & Spacemen Expansion Kit Plus". It is a 6MB zip file containing a PDF, hosted on my website. Please do not repost either the PDF or the link on other sites, but do enjoy it!

I had to laugh at the reviewer’s derision of S&S as too much like Star Trek, and too much like D&D! Those are positives, in my book! Kanterman, in his reply, states that it’s not fair to criticize it for being too Star Trek, since S&S is upfront about its intention to be a Star Trek game. He further does a great job defending that decision, saying that players will grok the premise right off the bat, and you can get the game going right away rather than explain some highly detailed science-fictiony premise. With regard to D&D, he explains that he found D&D to be lacking and wrote S&S to address these deficiencies as he saw fit. Definitely an interesting read!

Yeah, I just had to include the review that spawned Kanterman's response. If nothing else, Bartucci really needed to lighten up.
I may have some more to share. Somewhere. Just need to dig through some mystery boxes.

I just read through Richard Bartucci's review of Star Ships & Spacemen. The review was sort of a bit of a let down as far as what the reviewer thought of the game. His review actually made me want to play this game! I'm actually stoked for this game to see print! Star Trek meets Planet of the Apes. Hmm Where's my copy of Keep on The Borderlands?
