The admirals office is a small, brightly lit room, with a large desk almost dividing it in half across the short axis; chairs flank the sides on the entry side of the desk, and the back half is the admiral's chair, several shelves of knicknacks, and a very large sword.
To one side of the desk is a large view screen. It shows a shiny new destroyer being assembled in the base's repair facility.
The admiral motions to the officers to sit down.
"Gentlebeings, might I present the Thermopylae." His gruff voice, tinged with Scots, resonates, as he continues, "She's fit for trials, an' needs a crew. We've a wee bit of a shortage o' crew... So ye may clear the brig if you feel you need more crew. I'm assigning a security crewbeing to ye, too."
He turns to the comm, and tells his aide to send in "Paddy."
A rather homely woman of about 25 enters, her copper hair close cropped, her uniform neat. "Spacehand O'Keef, Reporting."
Returning her salute, the Admiral admonishes, "Paddy, these beings are manning the Thermopylae. Please don't break any of them. Move your gear aboard, and take charge of security."

The admiral continues, "On your shakedown, you need to patrol the following points: 0109-0310-0609, and then pick up Dr Kordoba and bring him back to Starbase Adak. He will be ready in 4 days, and needs to be here in 7 to catch the Orient Express" "Keep in mind that your sensors have a 1 light-year range, and you're going to be on the Videni end." Admiral Canarvin continues, pressing a few buttons and changing the display to show the orders [cs=2]—————————— Mission Orders —————————— | To: | Officers, CSS Thermopylae | From: | Admiral M. "That's it, folks. Leave tomorrow morning, be back 8 days later, and hit those spots, sensors wide. Dismissed." ===== As they exited the Admiral's office, Jasper turns to O'Keef and says, "greetings, Spacehand O'Keef, I am Ensign Jasper Alizarin. It's a pleasure to meet and look forward to working with you. Gather your gear, settle any outstanding affairs, and I'll meet you on the Thermopylae in an hour. We'll visit the brig together and see about putting a crew together. In an hour sharp then, dismissed." "I been there, Sir. There's one guy there. He's a total waste. Can't fight, and worse, the damned pointy thinks we can reason with the Videni," blurts the spacehand. Even as he was talking to her, Jasper was reaching out with his mind to pick up on Spacehand O'Keef's surface feelings and thoughts, hoping to get a feel for the Thermopylae's new Chief of Security. The furry might be cute if he weren't blue. I wonder if he's a Videni symp... thinks Paddy. Oh no, Big Blue, thought Grendel. Not before I see if the brig's got anyone who knows the right end of sonic-spanner to handle. Why did there have to be an Andromedan?, Grendel mused silently to himself as he went to his locker. Keeping the filters clean of blue fur is such a pain...at least he's not in a molting phase. Then, Grendel knew, there would be nothing to see of the blue furry being EXCEPT for trails of blue fur wherever he/she/it passed by. ==== Jasper left to gather his belongings together and board the Thermopylae. He finds the section with the Officers' Quarters and selects the room nearest the hallway to the bridge as he own. He throws his duffel bag on the bed and sets down his box of personal effects. "Room 18" is marked on the frame. He puts a few things from the box onto the desk, clearly indicating that this room has been claimed, and then walks the hallways of the ship that he can access. He makes mental notes of the rooms, sections, and layout of the ship. ==== Arriving at his locker, Grendel retrieved his few personnel belongings in a small duffle bag. When aboard the Thermopylae, I will probably have to make sure to adjust the Andromedan's...Alzan? Alzaran?, I think he/she/it said his/her/its name was...Argh...the pronouns drive me crazy. Just think of Big Blue as "Alzaran", it's easier. I'll have to adjust Alzaran's climate settings for his quarters. His species ALWAYS finds rooms too warm... He continued tallying the species' quirks, not wanting to think of the one he most disliked: their ability to mind-snoop. That was one thing Grendel, as a Rigellian, truly was wary of. He headed to the brig, refocusing his mind to see if anyone there had a Technician background. ====

I guess we'll have to be creative in getting some crewmen."

Grendel walks into security, and spots the roster on the wall. It reads as follows: Prisoner | Grade/Rate | Charge | Status | See | O'Keep, Patricia | SH/Security | Assaulting an officer | Trustee, Cell 2 Release to duty | Lt. Donar, CO, CSS Aleutians Adm. Canarvin | Shlemiel | SA/Commo | Insubordination | detainee, cell 3 | Lt. Donar, CO, CSS Aleutians |
There are 10 cells, 5 per side, and a small office at the far end. Just before the office is a locker bay on the left, and a workout station on the right. Cell #2 is open, and has some evidence of use. Cell 3 is secured. The staff security goon is inside the office. He takes little notice as Grendel approaches the board beside the office doors. As Grendel examines the board, the entry door opens, and in walks Paddy. She goes straight to the lockers, pulls out her gear, then goes to cell 2, and grabs the remaining uniforms, shoving them into a standard issue carry-case, and suddenly realizes whom she's seeing here. "Schlock's a wanna-be Videni, sir. Danger to us. Do us all a favor, leave it here." Her voice comes across as strident, her tone almost condescending. "Something's bugging you. Hell, probably me. Whatever. I hate how I know how people feel, but not what they're thinking."

It's almost comical how these screw ups happen, Jasper thinks to himself as he sees the pink toilet, I can't wait to see the look on Ensign D'Argent's face. Er, well it's Captain D'Argent now. Can't show any signs of disrespect to those violent Rigel.
He walks over to the scientific station on the bridge and brings up the computer. He reviews the status of work on the ship, and the ship's inventory. He notices that some vital items have not been requisitioned yet.
Japer opens his communicator and contacts Grendel, "Captain D'Argent, this is Ensign Alizarin. I am aboard the Thermopylae. In reviewing the ship's requisition orders, I noticed that some critical items are lacking. I would like to put in an expedited requisition order for a Planetary Radar Tracking Unit, an Auto-Analyzer, and a Medikit. May I have your permission to go forward with this requisition, Sir?"

"I appreciate your assessment, O'Keef," replied Grendel, thinking to himself, Schlock/Shlemiel isn't exactly what I was looking for. And adding more fodder onboard for O'Keef would cause abit too much instability at this stage. Of course, security could always use target practice..."He can stay where he's at. Don't take it personally, it's not you grinding my gears. You're the nicest thing that's happened to the Thermopylae today." He pauses a moment. "It's actually..." Suddenly his communicator beeps. "...that!" Flipping it open, he hears Jasper's voice, "Captain D'Argent, this is Ensign Alizarin. I am aboard the Thermopylae. I would like to put in an expedited requisition order for a Planetary Radar Tracking Unit, an Auto-Analyzer, and a Medikit. May I have your permission to go forward with this requisition, Sir?" "Very good, Alizarin," Grendel said, noting his earlier mishandling of the Andromedan's name. "Do what you can to get what she needs. I'll be coming aboard soon and you can give me a full report." Best to keep Big Blue busy. A busy Blue is a happy Blue!"If you'll excuse me O'Keef, I have to go make sure our legs will be in good shape before we start running. Engineering reports always tend to say things are nominal just to make you feel too comfortable. And too comfortable is always when the other guy pulls a Denebian Nova Flush on you when all your money's in the pot." Grendel shoulders his bag and begins to head towards the ship. Once there, he'll claim the room nearest Engineering and then head there to check through things personally.

"Thank you, Sir," Jasper replies sharply, "I shall do so immediately. Over and out."I hope that was smart and formal enough for my new Captain, Jasper thinks to himself as he hits the enter key on his terminal to send the requisition order, I don't want to start off on the wrong foot with my new C.O.

Paddy beams aboard the Planetary Radar Tracking Unit, an Auto-Analyzer, and a Medikit, and moves them to storage. She also hangs a pinup of "Hunks of the Confed" in the security section.

Once Spacehand O'Keef loads the new equipment into the storage room, Jasper checks each item to make sure that it functioning properly. Satisfied that the new equipment is in proper working order, he goes to Security find Spacehand O'Keef. He enters just as she is finishing 'decorating.' He smiles momentarily to himself before she turns to see him.
"Ah, Spacehand O'Keef," Jasper says in an easy tone as his blue fur ripples across his body, "may I have a word with you, informally?"
"Good," he continues quickly, "we will be leaving Station Adak shortly, but we are short on experienced crewmen. Admiral Canarvin has authorized Captain D'Argent to clear the Brig for additional crewmen."
Jasper shakes his head and sighs as he says, "unfortunately, there aren't a lot of crewmen in the Brig currently, and, therefore, we are in our current situation. "
He looks up into her eyes as he says with a wink and knowing nod, "now, since we'll shipping out soon, I don't think that Captain D'Argent begrudge you a celebratory evening of bar hopping, and a bit of... mischief."

"Mishcheif? Ah, I see sor!" She grins. It's a bit unnerving. Aye Sir...
She beams herself aboard the starbase. She walks into the starbase viewing lounge, grabs a whisky sour, downs it, letting about 1/4 dribble down her chin. She then walks up to a human engineering rating, looks at him, and starts to nibble on his ear, and says loudly, "Oh, baby, why'd you walk out this morning?"
He pushes her back a bit, then looks at her... "Who the hell are you? What the heck are you talking about?"
"Not again!" she cries. O'Keef literally throws herself at him. He stiff-arms her, drawing a bit of blood... she falls down, and starts into "battered girl routine." Security is called, and another guy, a moderately big medic, steps in and decks him.
Security shows promptly, taking both into custody... Paddy has slipped outside, and is making the most of her apparent misery. The guards, friends of hers, quicky process both, and escort all three to the Thermopolae's brig... where paddy locks them up for the night. She then challenges the goons to a game of craps... They waive off, and the human ensign promises, "Next time, babe... I don't want to be shanghaied here... I hope to eventually get promoted."

Jasper enters the Brig and looks over the two enlisted men there. He gives a satisfied nod of his head and hmm sound as turns to face Spacehand O'Keef with his back to the men in the Brig.
"Very well, Security Chief," he says with a knowing wink before he continues, "please have the completed paperwork on Captain D'Argent's desk within the hour for his signature. Carry on."
Jasper turns to give the men one final examining look before leaving the Brig. He returns to the Bridge and immediately pulls up the personnel files on the two men in the Brig and starts reviewing them closely.

Paddy finishes the paperwork, submits their names to D'Argent for signature.
She also asks station security to forward their belongings.

Captain's Log- Stardate 2101.98 In a strange twist of circumstance, I find myself the Acting C.O. of the C.S.S. Thermopylae several hours before departure on her first mission. Ensign D'Argent, the first Acting C.O., suddenly became ill with a serious virus and had to report to Adak's medical facility, which has left me as the Acting C.O. Our first mission is to patrol Waypoints 0109-0310-0609 along the Videni border, and then to proceed to Starbase Knikniknik. There we are taking on the passenger Dr. Kordoba and returning him to Starbase Adak. I have plotted the course for our first mission and laid into the navigation computer. It is as follows: === Stardate 2102.1 === Depart Starbase Adak (hexside 4) Proceed directly (hexside 4) to Waypoint 0308 at Warp 6 At Waypoint 0308 change course (hexside 5) Proceed to Waypoint 0109 No shields EUs Spent = 45 === Stardate 2102.2 === At Waypoint 0109 change course (hexside 3) Proceed directly to Waypoint 0210 (hexside 3) at Warp 1 Half Shields EUs Spent = 30 === Stardate 2102.3 === Proceed directly to Waypoint 0310 (hexside 3) at Warp 1 Half Shields EUs Spent = 25 === Stardate 2102.4 === At Waypoint 0310 change course (hexside 2) Proceed directly to Waypoint 0410 (hexside 2) at Warp 1 Half Shields EUs Spent = 30 === Stardate 2102.5 === Proceed directly to Waypoint 0509 (hexside 2) at Warp 1 Half Shields EUs Spent = 25 === Stardate 2102.6 === Proceed directly to Waypoint 0609 (hexside 2) at Warp 1 Half Shields EUs Spent = 25 === Stardate 2102.7 === At Waypoint 0609 change course (hexside 6) Proceed directly to Starbase Knikniknik (hexside 6) at Warp 2 Half Shields EUs Spent = 40 === Stardate 2102.8 === Leave Starbase Knikniknik (hexside 6) at Warp 4 Return to Starbase Adak No shields EUs Spent = 35

Stardate 2102.085 Paddy, in Security, looks over at the two guys locked up. "Ach, orders say to hold you until 2102.15, lads.. Have some dinner, though." She slides field ration trays through the food slots. "I'm off to check on some things, and I'll be back momentarily."
Paddy, upon leaving, heads to the bridge. She calls starbase security, and asks for Ens. Ell. "Hiya, Norm!"
"Yes, O'keef? What ya need?" The ensign looks warily at O'Keef on screen.
Paddy quickly gets a serious look, and says, "Please have the incarceration order adjusted to read 2102.15... that should have them in custody long enough to invoke the shanghai clause."
"Sure thing, Paddy. Stay out of trouble. Ell, out."
Stardate 2102.09 "Flight plan acknowledged, cleared to depart stardate 2102.1. Thermopolae will be declared overdue and missing on 2103.0. Good luck." System control informs you further, "Stand-by for a last minute crewman, Ens. Grayson. We'll beam him aboard momentarily. Adak departure clear."
