Since my hello thread failed to garner one single reply, perhaps I should be more verbose no? I came to Star Trek not through the TV show or the Movies but in 1985 via the FASA Trek RPG. That's right. I had seen some of the TV shows and Star Trek the Motionless Picture, but I wasn't really "in to" Trek. Let me tell you, my love of RPGing and my love of Trek were cemented together forever. Now I am not a fan of anything past Star Trek IV. Why? Cause Star Trek's V and VI have those useless TNG Klingons (Samurai-Biker-Vikings as I call them) and well other than some decent stories on DS9 (it wasn't overly bad a show) most of the TNG+ Era is lost on me. Same goes for the new Trek, I really enjoyed the movie in the theatre and pretty much turned off my brain and watched the pretty lights. Then I saw it again. Things began to bother me about the sets and the scale of it all. Then I watched it again and the story started to annoy me. Too many parts that left me wondering wtf? Then I watched the RiffTrax of it and that was the end for me. So while I am a TOS fan, I will admit to being a dirhard Movie Era/FASA Trek fan more so Cheers and I look forward to being part of this community

Welcome to the board!
Yeah, even though I mostly like newer Trek it doesn't really "click" as well for me either. There's just something fundamentally lacking about the character archetypes, I think, that don't connect with me at the subconscious level like TOS does.

Also welcome, aslanc!
I think that part of the charm of TOC was its cheezy realism, by which I mean things worked well most of the time but there was always the threat of something breaking down at a critical time. Many of the other series are so slick in prodution that you never really feel like anything would stop working. Kirk's Enterprise was often held together by Scotty by wire and chewing gum, but for some of the others they would just change a computer chip and be off and running again. Totally different style of story!

Thanks, yeah the new Trek really bothers me the more I think about it. I really, really hated how they handled the Kobayashi Maru scene... oh boy Hey how do we get Email notifications about replies?

I first was exposed to Star Trek in 1971... I stopped by a friend's house after Cub Scouts and saw this green-skinned pointy-eared dude fiddling with a bunch of vacuum tubes, and calling them "stone knives and bear-skins". I thought "that looks interesting", but didn't pursue it for a few weeks, until a meeting was canceled. I don't remember what episode was on then, but I soon dropped out of Cub Scouts so I could watch the show. I got into FASA-Trek in 1988, just in time for all the other players to leave the area, and haven't gotten in a game since. Never did really get into TNG, and each succeeding series was even more bleh, as were the movies. I absolutely will not see the new distortion, so I'm glad we can get our real-Trek fixes here.
