Space Patrol (1977) includes this statement: “In testing of these systems the fellow who runs the game has been variously called Matrix Man, Mission Master, Organian, and by the hard-core D&D types, Dungeon Master. By whatever name, he is as necessary to the game as the players. He is a player, for no Mission master can avoid seeking as much from the play as possible. It is the Organian who generates the scenarios, draws the maps, populates the place, resolves the combat and personifies all of the encountered critters.”
Although Organian is a clever one, it is Mission Master (MM) that seems to have stuck in later editions (STAGFF and so forth). Starships & Spacemen (1978) introduces the term Starmaster (SM).
How about you? Do you use one of these or some other clever but appropriate alternative to DM? Or do you just use DM, and who cares if it’s appropriate? Or do you use a generic term, like GM or referee or judge?

Game Master is pretty generic, but it's my fall-back term for most games. For my OD&D games it's either Dungeon Master or Referee.

GM or Referee. I hate "DM"... too close to "BM".

I always preferred:
"LORD GAMEMASTER!"
Imitating Steve Ihnat saying "LORD Garth!" in Whom Gods Destroy "I am Lord Garth, formerly of Izar, and I lead the future masters of the universe."
That line NEVER grows old...

No... the one who runs the game is ADMIRAL OF STARFLEET! Just kidding... or am I? Kidding or not, not quite... Adm. SF would be the Author. Any lesser gamemaster would be Chief of SF Ops... ;D

Ok, I'll go with that... Starfleet Operations Chief. Chief of Operations, or ChOps for short.
