"Bellerophon" - how did I miss that one? And, having, earlier, compared C57D to a WW2 PT Boat, how did I miss the obvious similarity in identifying number structure? Oh well, bang goes that brilliant theory lol

H.M.S. Billy Ruffian (aka H.M.S. Bellerophon) H.M.S. Eggs and Bacon (aka H.M.S. Agamemnon) Ol' Jack Tars had a way with 'renaming' ships to something they liked, whether their Lordship's of the Admiralty liked it or not! That's another aspect that could be included in F.P. - nicknames for ships as well as people. The crew of a small patrol ship like C57D might have a nickname for their ship. That would give a bit more character to everything involved. Puts a more human side to it - as opposed to the cold nature of a bureaucracy/Admiralty.

Oh no...had some more evil thoughts...
U.P. Fleet Designations
The United Planets operates a number of spacecraft designated according to their type/role, hull number and to some extent size. The designation structure has some inherent similarities to methods used in Earth's own naval past but, adapted to the needs of a space fleet.
Types include:
A - Fleet Auxiliaries B - Battle Craft C - Cruisers D - Battle Escorts
Each type has hull numbers issued sequentially within the type such that, any vessel within that type would have a unique hull number. The number of digits assigned for hull numbers are not restricted.
Within each type, there is also a class denominator, as in Class-A, B, C etc...
Our classic example: C57D - Type: Cruiser, Hull #57, Class D (aka Patrol)
Current list of types/classes:
AxxxA - Fleet Tenders - Vessels intended to support, repair, resupply other vessels in the fleet. AxxxB - Supply Transports - Vessels intended to move supplies/equipment from point to point. AxxxC - Personnel Transports - Vessels intended to move troops/crews etc. from point to point. AxxxD - Combat Transports - Vessels intended to bring troops into a combat zone and deliver them directly or indirectly.
BxxxA - Battleships - Very large and heavily armed/protected ships used for fleet action and/command duties. BxxxB - Battle Cruisers - Somewhat lighter and more agile ships used for flanking/strike duty in fleet actions.
CxxxA - Heavy Cruisers - Large, long-range ships with moderate protection and good firepower. CxxxB - Light Cruisers - Medium, long-range ships with moderate protection and firepower. CxxxC - Escort Cruisers - Smaller, long-range ships with moderate protection and mostly defensive firepower. CxxxD - Patrol Cruisers - Small, long-range ships with light protection and firepower.
DxxxA - Destroyers - Medium/Small, short-range ships with moderate protection and firepower. DxxxB - Frigates - Smaller, short-range ships with light protection and moderate firepower. DxxxC - Corvettes - Small, short/medium-range ships with light protection and firepower.
At any given time, there are probably no more than a dozen battle craft in service - they are the Capitol Ships of the fleet. Dozens of Cruisers and Battle Escorts fill the ranks of the fleet with dozens of Auxiliaries supporting the logistic needs of the service.
Primary weapon types include:
Heavy Blaster Cannons Blaster Cannons Standard Blasters Light Blasters Pulse Blasters
Heavy Torpedoes Torpedoes Missiles

Maybe, as part of campaign introduction, the GM should ask the Players to suggest some nicknames for their Cruiser?

Starcruiser - love your detailed UP navy ship class listing. This seems an ideal example of a "big navy", militaristicly focused UP. I would imagine that this would support a more conflict focused campaign. maybe introducing a new, violent, alien race to struggle against. The UP has only just got out into space, and already it is fighting for survival. The more I look at this whole thread, and the campaign I am trying to build, the more I realise that 90% of it is just reasoned extrapolation. We simply have so very little source material to go on, that any number of equally valid interpretations can be supported from the source. My personal view is a "small UP navy" one. 10-15 light Warships with 30 carried marines, 60 Patrol Cruisers - very light and fast scout/"coastguard" vessels and 50-60 Transports - cargo & passenger ships, both in UP and private service. But, as I already said, FP is limited enough to support both (and potentially many other) visions.

Doesn't have to be a truly Militaristic UP. They could just be threatened by others or, even other humans (we being our own worst enemies throughout history).
Maybe the UP is all of about a dozen systems/worlds semi-centered on Earth but, some of the colonies didn't join the UP... There might be, let's say two other moderate powers made up of a handful of dissenting colonies, and maybe a few other totally independent worlds.
Maybe there are no living aliens in the general area, or maybe there are (aka mysterious forces afoot).

With only 1 movie, there are many possible avenues. None are more valid than others.
My personal choice would be a 'small UP', with small ships acting more like coast guard or patrol boats. Their purpose would be piracy, colonial policing, rescue, etc. In this view, the UP is THE unified human government. There are no 'opposing governments'. But there is piracy, colonial policing, rescue, exploration, etc. This has the benefit of lending itself to a world where the PCs matter.

Inbetween a still hectic RL, I continue to work on this FP campaign concept. Attached here is a ship design worksheet, with six designs, based around a substantially amended version of the CT ship construction rules. I designed C57D first and then built the others around that. I will produce some more updates asap, but this is it for now..... Attachments:Ship design.xlsx (28.2 KB)

I am determined to complete this campaign project - even if it's not until new year! So far I have written up character creation, laser and hand blaster rules, six ships stats (C(ruiser)-B, C-C, C-D, T(ransport)-B, T-C & W(arship)-D) and setting info (and a few rules) for shipboard tech (quanto-gravitic hyper drive, blasters, DC fields etc). Next is more setting info - UP colonies and bases, interstellar travel rules, equipment rules and maybe a brief summary of UP history? That is my aim - but "best laid plans of mice and men" etc.
