Wish me luck, all!
At Origins Game Fair last week, I met up with a guy I haven't played with in a few years. He's patching his life back together enough to maybe play again, and I threw out all of the ideas I've been storing up for years, including Far Trek and maybe a game in the period during or just before TOS. He responded a bit positively, said he had the Far Trek book.
Later, I reported all this to my wife, who immediately said, "I'll play!", then turned to our daughter, "Hey, Dad's going to run a Far Trek game with X. Are you interested?". So, that sounded positive.
Three more recruitment pitches went well, so now I just need to fix a time & date for Session Zero.
I've collected a handful of FASA Trek modules that I'd like to use as starting points, I think I'd really like to use Decision at Midnight, as that can be a kickoff for a longer campaign, or just stand on its own.

Hey, cool, thanks! These are compatible with S&S2's starship rules, right? <goes to re-read whole thread...> Yes, yes, they are. Now I just gotta print them, maybe reversing the b & w, so I won't suck my printer dry? EDIT: Meh, it lived.

Two of my player recruits admitted to a not-strong relationship to TOS, and thought they might look at some of the episodes to warm up. I'll take suggestions.
I'm thinking "Dagger of the mind" is most relevant to a plot element of "Decision at Midnight", though it seems too spoiler-y for me (This character is the hero of Major NPC, who will be going through exactly what his Hero does in the episode).
"Where no man has gone before" and "The Cage" might be good for visuals, as I want to aim for the 5-15 years before TOS era (subject to player approval at the table).
Not-TOS: I may insist on a viewing party of "The Caine Mutiny" afterwards, though. It is a classic!

Those are all great episodes. I would just pick one because the players are unlikely to watch 3 episodes for you (based on my experience). If you do that, you might be able to get them to watch a second episode before the second adventure and a third episode before the third adventure, and so on.
“The Corbomite Maneuver” is my absolute favorite episode, but I would save it to use before a more exploration-ey module.
Before Decision at Midnight I asked my players to watch “Whom Gods Destroy.” I believe a lot of the lore from that episode reappears in the module.

Oh, yes, I was thinking of just one episode at a time.
I was thinking about "Whom gods destroy", but blanked on the title (I think that's what I meant, instead of "dagger of the mind"), but: a) I wonder if it doesn't give away too much, and b) I might be running this pre-TOS-era, so Garth might still be active? I definitely want to do it either after, or before a later game session.

I don’t know how many FASA modules you’re planning to run, but I would say a solid majority of them are sequels to TOS episodes. So you might be fighting an uphill battle with your chosen timeframe. And are you going to avoid Romulans altogether? Just a thought.

Ooo, I hadn't thought about the Romulans vs. pre-TOS yet. I'm trying not to plan beyond this module and about 3 short sessions. Two of my players have been "D&D and nothing but" for years, and two of them have been hard to get together to play anything at all, so I'm just reveling in getting to play Trek with them at all! One of those may be leaving town in the winter, so a long campaign may not be in the cards. I've got 3 other mods I could run, all from FASA's redcoat/movie era, only "Doomsday like any other" is a TOS sequel, but two are Romulan border. We haven't had Session Zero yet; we'll see what shakes out from there. I do intend to present this game as written for TOS-movie era, but I think I can work around that. "Lucanii Drift" is a dream of mine, that could easily be pre-TOS era!

Session Zero was tonight. I asked them to watch "Journey to Babel" beforehand, as it introduced Orions, Andorians, and Tellarites.
Lt.j.g. T'Poe, Vulcan, Logistics & Administrative Officer (head of yeoman office) Noted specialty in Administration and Organization Lt. T'ssani, Alpha Centauran, Chief Engineer Lt.j.g. Peter Beaufort, human, Sciences Officer and Navigation/sensors officer Lt.j.g. Riss, Andorian, Chief of Security Lt.j.g. Paca Abraham, human, Chief Communications Officer Lt.j.g. Dr Liam Williams, Counselor and Assistant Medical Officer.
No Gold Shirts, though I might assume T'Poe's office sorta qualifies as one, and Lt. Beaufort's kinda in that department, too. This ship is too small and Military to have a real Sciences Department.
Dr. Williams was almost a Tellarite Counselor, which was pretty mind-bending to think about.
The ship, named USS Arkadelphia in the module, was renamed Philadelphia by popular vote, and late TOS was selected as the era (adventure written for the "redcoat" movie era).
We played around with a deck of Background Cards that I have, and learned that while these officers were on their previous tour, or together at the Academy, they got up to several shenanigans. For instance, the Security Officer and his two chiefs are convinced that they are here-- on the Klingon border in a small ship, far from any base-- because of [REDACTED] that they saw on their last ship. He's renaming the brig an Oubliette, as that's where they are.
Next game in 2 weeks.
