Here I have compiled a list of the (in my opinion) more memorable characters who have served aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701) as shown through the run of TOS, with a few added from TAS and even one from TWOK.
Some of the oldest RPG materials for Star Trek presume that you will want to play the cast of the show and thus record further adventures of the Enterprise. I think that would actually be kind of neat, but even more so if it were opened up to all the known personnel. In a way, I am indirectly inspired by Star Trek XI, the movie that came out this year, to present a campaign that is not necessarily the continuing adventures but rather the alternative adventures. So presenting the players with such a diversity of character options would (hopefully) yield an interesting mix of characters, with a very strong “Star Trek feel” while at the same time being original.
Finally, in some way I feel like it would make it somehow more possible to play a character as a character rather than numbers on a sheet. I don’t really know how to explain that, other than I like the idea of sitting down and saying “What if our command staff consists of Number One, Gary Mitchell, Marlena Moreau, Thelin, and M'Benga?”
Well, it’s one idea!

Matt Decker was one of the best "guest captains" of any of the original Trek episodes, despite what went down. I imagine serving with him would have been a lot like serving with Kirk. I think the flawed-but-well-meaning Star Fleet glitterati were some of the best; Daystrom in "The Ultimate Computer", the aforementioned Decker, and to a lesser extent John Gill from Patterns of Force.

This is still one of my favorite threads. What do people think of playing “TV characters” instead of original characters?

I guess the other question would be: what do you think about playing in an alternate timeline rather than playing in the “canonical” universe? Not an alternate timeline in the sense that there was necessarily a time-travel event that changed the timeline or whatever.

what do you think about playing in an alternate timeline rather than playing in the “canonical” universe? If I understand your question correctly ... wouldn't most Trek novel and RPG settings classify as an alternate timeline? I'm assuming that the point wouldn't be to follow the exact sequence of the series but instead to take these characters and go off in new directions.

Yeah, basically. One approach is to pick a point of divergence, say the end of TOS Season 3, and continue the story in a direction in which “anything can happen”. For example, Kirk could die, and “TMP” never “happens”. What I have in mind is going back even further and saying my point of divergence is somewhere in the middle of The Cage. Pike leaves Starfleet and goes off to become the Warlord of Orion; Number One becomes Captain for Enterprise Five Year Mission—which means Kirk never does; she never enters the galactic barrier, so Mitchell never mutates... Something like that. But that’s just an example. It would be up to the players to pick their characters and recast them in new roles.

My players always rejected playing the series' characters, but have interacted with a few, so I've had to play them as NPC's. Specifically, Kirk and McCoy after the conclusion of the 5YM, with Kirk at SFHQ as Home Fleet's Commanding Admiral.

RAND HEAD YEOMAN CY 080-495 So he’s obviously speculating about the Enterprise’s “current” (in 1978) personnel: It’s only people who are alive at the end of TAS; plus some people who have obviously left the crew (Riley, Alden, Rand) have returned with promotions; plus obviously he has added the new Phase II characters (Decker, Ilia, Xon). Interestingly, he seems to assume Chekov has moved on for good. It’s an unrealistically maximalistic list (in terms of who exactly it includes still/together all serving on board); still, it is useful because it paints a pretty good picture of what a ship’s complement ought to include (eg., a ship should have all those different kinds of scientists).
I noticed that the “Beyond the Final Frontier” table of departments (classes) is based on this. See for yourself:
01 Command 02-03 Helm 04-05 Navigation 06-13 Ordnance 14-32 Sciences 33-45 Medical 46-76 Engineering 77-79 Communications 80-00 Security

That list of names and positions is a very nice piece of research. Maybe not quite-complete, but exceptionally dense. Hadley sat in the Nav chair more often than science (and as much as Chekov swapped between the two positions). And Hadley never wore blue. Giotto does wear full commander stripes. (There's an unnamed navigator with full cmdr stripes and I've recently noticed a few other cuffs. There's a surprising amount of commanders on board with McCoy and Scott being two obvious exceptions for their importance. Odd.) Whether the following site was around 13.5yrs ago when this thread was last updated, it is a list with photos & episodes of every background face seen on 1701. It skips TAS, but includes the STI-VI. I should note that it appears to yave recently become contaminated with its first modern tv entry. I hope the site is able delineate classic from alternate new stuff. I'm going back now to save the page as is for my own reference. memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Unnamed_USS_Enterprise_(NCC-1701)_personnel
