Jasper smiles at Žabar and tries to appear as non-threatening as possible. Not wanting to offend Žabar, he waits for RJ to respond to his query.

Lt. Grayson
Grayson was annoyed at having been ordered to put his weapon away... then watching as his captain was threatened by a native with a weapon!
Keeping his hands clear realising the alien had the drop on them now, he spoke up "Sir, if you don't like them there Vee Denny then ah reckon we'll get along fine, seen as they tried to ventilate me th' first time ah met th' swines. They're kinda all crazy with their ways an wantin' everyone else ta agree with 'em or be vaporised, an ah fer one would stand alongside ya if they was ta come callin'. Now what say ya lower ya weapon an we have a chat all nice an friendly like. Look. Ah even put ma gun away." he says, shooting a glare at the Captain.

"Oh man, look at that machinegun..." RJ whispers, obviously fascinated, then looks up at Žabar and lifts his own left hand, pointing to himself "I am a human, and my friends call me RJ. It is a pleasure to meet you, Žabar of the Tanku." he bows his head slightly.

"Not 'of'...Tanku is my rank," and, holding the weapon at port arms, "My species is called Þrhaka. You are impressed with the weapon, Really?"

"Ah'd be more impressed if you was ta lower it an' invite us in fer what passes fer the local coffee. That way maybe we can find out more about yerself and yer world, and find out what th' Videni is doin' here. Like ah said, they come round ah'll be stood alongside ya. Ah got a score ta settle with them mad eyed lunatics..."

"They came in an effort to convert us. They found the expedition expensive." About this time it occurs to the three of you that it hasn't blinked at all, and that it's pupil are tiny pinpricks in sea of red-brown iris... this thing can probably spot the ship from the surface at night.

"Ah, my apologies, Tanku Žabar." RJ says. "Yeas, that's is an impressive weapon... but as my friend says, I'd be better impressed if we can talk without weapons pointing. To quote a cliche, we come in peace."

"Expense... HA! Good fer you. Though ah reckon yer should watch yer back in case those nutcases come back wi' what they see as a more... 'persuasive' offer. It's down ta the Cap'n but if you guys ask fer our help...?" he turned to the Captain. "Yer never know. Newest entrant ta the federation..." he turned to the alien "That is if ya want it. We don't shove our ways down no ones throats unless they want it."

Jasper let the natural conversation develop in the hope that it fosters a sense of calm with Žabar, and then says formally, "I am Captain Jasper Alizarin, Commander of the C.S.S. Thermopylae. It is a pleasure to meet you, Tanku Žabar. We are representatives of a space faring Confederation of peoples, and the Videni are our enemies due to their aggressive 'conversion' attempts. In all our encounters with them they are resistant to any offers of peace and reconciliation. I am very pleased to hear that your people were able to fight off the Videni advances. However, your planet is near the edge of their dominion so you should prepare yourselves for more attempts by them to assimilate your planet and people."

"They found the expedition expensive. I doubt they'll try again. We have no use for their religion. The Drakiš voted, and adjusted their attitudes. They were terrified. So much so that we still have their subcraft, and they vanished into thin air. Speaking of which, where is your subcraft parked? The Šepš must not be allowed to see it."

Jasper twitches his whiskers as he says, "we arrived planet side using technology that allows us to travel without any type of craft. We came directly from my ship in orbit to here. Already seeing some of your people's technology, I believe that you understand that this type of travel is possible. Would the leaders of your people be receptive to speaking with representatives from other space-faring species?"

"The Drakiš are unlikely to reverse their decisions. All offworlders are forbidden, under penalty of compulsion, to have contact with Drakiš or Šepš. We Tanku are permitted to warn you. I can, however, trade with you on a more personal level... the Tanku have not been forbidden to trade. Then again, technically, we are not part of Č'čuš." He looks straight at the translator, his expression intent, and repeats, "Č'čuš. Č'čuš." Looking back at Jasper, "Your magic seems to have failed... annoying, for such a basic word." He proceeds to sit down in the doorway, and lay the weapon across his lap.

Jasper sits down on the ground outside the doorway, and his face lights up happily as he says, "the Drakiš are gracious for allowing the Tanku to warn off-worlders about your customs and laws, thank you. I would certainly love to trade with you, if possible. I seek information on your world and people. Also, I am most interested in hearing about the Videni encounter and its aftermath. What do you value? What would like from us? What is the 'penalty of compulsion'?"

RJ is also very interested in the alien culture, but he allows the captain to do the talking now, since he's better at it... and in charge.

"They program you to go away, and describe horrible side effects from having come. Or worse. The videni who came here now believe they are the only real videni left." He looks from officer to officer. "Tanku can't do this, only Drakiš. If they had been useful, instead they would have been compelled to serve the Drakiš."
