You can get by without them.
I think we'll use flat default ships for game 1.

To set up your ship, you get 5 bonuses. Allocated them to raise the starting values.
The spread your crew teams amongst the 10 types.

Each turn you either do (1) Stellar movement, (2) Planetary Exploration (but only if in the same hex as a system) (3) replenish at starbase (if in hex with starbase) (4) field damage repair.
Note that two types of planets will be used. Major Worlds (mission worlds) and minor worlds (fuel prospecting only).
Fuel is a pure expendable. You spend it on speed, shields, weapons, and some encounter items.
Movement costs (Speed * 2)–1 Energy Points (EP).
Shields, when a hazard or combat happen, are 10 points per shield per hazard or per combat round
Each weapon fired costs 1 EP per shot.
Field damage repair costs 1 EP per 2 Armor repaired, to a maximum of (1d6+DamCon Teams assigned)*10 per turn
Teleporting a team on a mission costs an EP.
Some missions and some mission failures have
Game is (normally) 20 turns.
You gain VP's for accomplishing encounters on planets (5-15 by type) and beating enemy vessels (by combat or parley) (5-15), and finishing your patrol of all 4 planets in under 20 turns (5 per turn per other are still out.). You loose them for killed, kidnapped (but unrecovered), or otherwise eliminated crew teams (3 each team), fleeing ship-to-ship combat before 5 rounds, or taking more than 20 turns to RTB. Your score is frozen as is if your ship is destroyed, counting all crew as losses.
Note that "passing score" is 51VP. 101+ is "promotion zone"...
Your official mission is to take your ship, and patrol all 4 major worlds on the map, and RTB. Minor worlds are purely there for fuel prospecting.
I'm about to go make the map.
