A friend was rewatching the Star Trek TOS episodes in the new remastered format. Not only did they do the external shots, they digitized and cleaned up the entire thing. They not only redid a lot of the ship views, maneuvers, etc, but they redid the planets.
I have the TOS in original DVD format and don't watch them very often, so I think it would be hard to justify to my wife buying the whole set all over again even if the remastered ones are awesome.
So ... what do you think of the remastered DVDs? Which versions (if any) do you own?

I had a handful of the older TOS DVDs, but jumped on the remasters when they came out. The new effects neither bother nor thrill me, but seeing how much cleaner and more colorful all of the live action shots are makes a significant difference. At the same time, it's a chunk of change to get all three, so it may be worth waiting until Deep Discount DVD has one of their semi-annual sales (summer sale coming up, I think). It could be the difference between paying $120 versus $150. But the experience is definitely worth it!

(it's not letting me vote... Aarrgghh!)
Other: I've watched the remasters online on a big screen TV.

If you disable Javascript, it will let you vote. Sorry, I don't know why that is.
I am content with the originals. I just don’t like CGI. Models look “real” to me. The picture quality on the original DVDs is fine with me!

I bought the originals, specificially because I didn't want no lame-ass CGI.

Well, in general I'd rather see actual acting than CGI, but in this case it doesn't seem that "lame-ass" to me. Of course, I haven't seen a lot of it, yet, but what I've seen is pretty well done.

One of the things I absolutely love about the remasters is how well they redid some of the scenics, especially those previously represented by matte paintings re-used over a number of stories. I thought they were very well done, and respectful to the iconic originals. It was as if seeing it as you remembered it at the time, rather than as it actually appeared. Example:

The CGI was excellently redone, but the ships are not always up to snuff...
The scenics, however, are just about perfect.

I like the remasters a lot. I think the shuttle landing in "Journey to Babel" is fantastic.
I voted "other", as I have some of the remasters bought from iTunes and residing on my iPod. Seems really like the future to be able to watch "Star Trek" on that tiny little thing.

I watched some of the re-mastered episodes on HDTV: hated the new ships, liked the new planets from orbit. Other than that, it was just like watching good ol' TOS. I don't think it's justified buying the new stuff. There's really not all that much new.

The mattes–especially for 'The Man Trap'–were really something, and I enjoy the TAS cargo drone showing up as the USS Antares, but many of the space sequences seemed to leech all the colour and variety out of TOS.
That the CBS crew didn't seem to have enough time to give enough care and attention to each episode's starship lighting and rendering detail probably has more to the production schedule than deliberate creative choices on anyone's part.

To necro this a little, my wife found all three remastered TOS seasons on sale at Best Buy and I'm going to get them as a Father's Day present. I can't wait to watch them and see for myself if they are as good as advertised.

I've seen several episodes of the remastered TOS and overall I'm really impressed. There is an "extra" on one disk that talks about the process used to clean up the shows and they give a half-screen shot with old and new on at the same time so you can see the difference. Wow. The new ones are so much crisper and brighter.
I agree that the ships don't seem that awesome. I wish they had done things as well as they did for the DS9 and Voyager ships or the new movies.
The planet shots are pretty sweet, however, and the overall lighting is great. Overall I'm glad to have acquired this. (Well, technically I don't get it until Father's Day but I have free time at the moment and my wife is letting me start watching early.)
Still annoyed that they used "air date" order instead of production order. Maybe this isn't a big deal later in the series, but clearly WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE has to be the first one seen (not counting THE CAGE, which is still on the season 3 disks). Maybe after that the order won't matter much.

It won't let me vote even with Java off. I've seen TOS and TAS online only in the original and remastered CGI rubbish. The CGI is so objectifying and modern that it is jarring, IMHO. I'd love to get the DVDs of the non-CGI version but they're bloody expensive -- same complaint I have with the Star Wars DVDs. Grrr.
