Hi, folks. New user. In a way, photomanipulations seem the opposite of Old School, but my gaming group "casts" actors for PCs and NPCs in our TOS games, so I figured I'd share some of mine. If this is not cool, I'll happily delete. I did all these, they're on my Photobucket account, but I posted links to save bandwidth on my end and to keep the thread from getting crazy big. This is the first one I ever did: Dennis Haysbert in the center chair. This was a PC, directly porting Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House into service as Chief Medical Officer. Gary Oldman as Thomas McComas, Chief Engineer, was my PC. There's no character attached to the rest of these. I either did them on a lark or on request. Christopher Meloni as Security ChiefEwan McGregor as Transporter ChiefDavid McCallum as HelsmanRicky Whittle as a nurseLiev Schreiber as a Command Division officer, and later on in his career. Selma Blair as a Vulcan Communications OfficerAmber Rose as an Orion dancerCote De Pablo as an Orion lounge singerI can't recall this actor's first name, but his last name is Harris, and he's a Captain. This one incorporates my first attempt at a custom assignment patch. John Ritter, using the same source image as the last one. Mario Ferreira (from America's Got Talent) as a Klingon captainCote de Pablo as a Redshirt

They are not only permitted, they are welcome! Our Grendelwulf is particularly talented at them. Anyway, I think they’re fun to look at.
One nitpick: I’m believe “nurse” was still a gender-specific term in the 60s (remember that it originally referred to breastfeeding). That may or may not matter to anyone else, but to me the idea of a male nurse in Star Trek feels anachronistic. Regards.

Well, the nurse manip filled a request. I'm not even sure who Ricky Whittle is, and the request was for a nurse, so I called him a nurse.
That said, I think the idea of "male nurses" fits in pretty well with TOS's tendency to defy the stereotypes of its day.

Those are both great manips.
I never would have thought of Ciaran Hinds for a Romulan, but seeing the manip I realize he's a perfect fit.

They're all pretty good. A few aren't too believable, but this one (David McCallum as Helsman) totally looks like a character you'd have seen on TOS. Fantastic jobs.

Thanks! Yeah, I think that starting with a source image from the 1960s was a big help in terms of both quality-matching and getting a "look" that fit. I'm actually interested in going back and doing a few more "vintage" manips.

I was thinking about this the other day, and how I would not create a photomanipulation of a Human with facial hair. All evidence in Star Trek points to the logical conclusion that Humans do not grow facial hair. The same is true for Vulcans, etc. Facial hair is a trait of troublemaker races such as Tellarites and Klingons.

Kyle has a moustache in TAS.
Leslie has notable 5 o'clock shadow in several images; upper lip. Galloway, too.

And Decker, in The Doomsday Machine has a serious stubble field going.

Clear evidence they weren’t human.

All evidence in Star Trek points to the logical conclusion that Humans do not grow facial hair. Well, the depends on whether you count pointy sideburns as facial hair. If you do, there goes that theory. But if you consider only beards and mustaches, you might be right, at least as far as Starfleet officers. Harry Mudd had his mustache. In terms of my own manips, I've not given it much thought. I did use a mustachioed Liev Schreiber for a Movie-Era manip, but beards and mustaches seemed to be undergoing something of a renaissance in the Movie Era, as demonstrated by Scotty, Styles, Terrell and Bateson. As a matter of aesthetics, though, if I were to try to put together fan fic or campaign setting using manips, I think I'd follow your dictum if only to better distinguish smooth-foreheaded Klingons from Humans. In fact, the only bearded TOS manip I've done was this of Ewan McGregor, and the beard was specifically requested.

Am thinking of going for the pointy sideburns look, myself.

If I ever shave my beard off again, I'm going to sport the pointy sideburns for at least a while, though I'm not sure I'll leave the house that way.
