Really makes you think, how the secret to a good show is a having a good cast (good actors, good characters), and all the rest is just window-dressing. You missed one vital element: a good set of writers writing good plots for those characters. Effects can be take or leave, but if present, need to be used effectively. B5, TOS, Firefly... they had them all. And all had excellent use of effects. TNG, Voyager: Good characters and good actors, but often lame writing. Andromeda: Bad acting almost made up for by cool characters, excellent writing, and great use of effects... until KS took over mid season 2.
