What I would like to do is take my FedSpace map and the Lyran expansion and put them all together to make a decent looking map of the Star Trek universe that I can use for a RPG or wargame or whatever.
Anyone know of decent cheap (or free) mapping software?
1. It should be able to do hexes. Hopefully numbered hexes.
2. It should have space symbols (so I can do stars, starbases, base stations, whatever) along with the abillity to add political boundaries.
3. I'd like something where I could put more than one symbol in the same hex. (My map has some hexes with both a star and a base.)

I've not found that be an issue since you can use your own icons/symbols.

I am, but I thank you for the link anyway.
As it turns out, the Federation Space map is a little different from the Federation & Empire map (F&E has a more Neutral Zones and such), but it may be close enough that I could use it for a RPG campaign.
My "ideal" map would combine the Fed Space map with the Kzinti expansion from Nexus magazine....

Don’t you mean Lyran expansion?
Would you use Lyrans in a Star Trek RPG?

Don’t you mean Lyran expansion? Yes. Must learn to think first, type second. Would you use Lyrans in a Star Trek RPG? I'm not sure, exactly. It might depend upon whether I ran a Federation-centered game or more of a "frontier" game. In a Fed game the Lyrans are probably too far away to do much, since they don't share a common border with the Federation. On the other hand, I like to take various races and at least offer them as options to my players, so maybe I'd give the Lyrans a chance.

So, in TOS, was the Enterprise basically in “Federation territory” the entire time? I dunno, the whole concept of territory and borders is hard to wrap my mind around. There were definitely episodes where they were making runs between known Federation settlements, and certainly plenty of reference to Klingon and Romulan border areas. But a lot of the time I thought they were pressing off into unknown space. If the galaxy is already carved up into five or six empires, the scope and mystery seem to be lost a little.
