Anyone know anything about this? wizkidsgames.com/startrek/star-trek-expeditions/It is supposed to come with a couple of crew figures and a couple of ship figures. It's hard to tell if it's supposed to be character-to-character or ship-to-ship.

It's a board game. The Enterprise is essentially a playing piece.
There is ground and space combat potential, which, IIRC, is supposed to be on-grid hero-clix type action.
I suspect without much evidence that it will also be compatible with the other one's minis.
The designer (Reiner Knizia) is not noted for theme other than as a paste-on, so... I don't have very high expectations. He's been derided in the past as "king of the pasted-on theme." And rightly so; most of his games can be easily reskinned to new themes with no needed changes, and could readily be abstracts. (RK's Knights is a themed yachtzee derivative, for example.) RK's games are usually enjoyable, tho'.

I’d check it out. I wish it had the look-and-feel of actual TOS rather than the new movie, but, you know me!

I saw it in a game store yesterday and passed on it because it just seemed too much like a card game. Now I'm kind of wishing I had picked it up anyway.

I saw it in a game store yesterday and passed on it because it just seemed too much like a card game. Now I'm kind of wishing I had picked it up anyway. Okay, so I'm a sucker. I went ahead and suppored my local game store by buying the game. ;D I haven't had much time to look at it yet and will try to post some sort of review soon. Here are some initial thoughts: 1. The minis are kind of cool, but larger than I thought they would be. I've never had any heroclix, so others may not be surprised by this. 2. The four characters provided (Kirk, Spock, Uhura, McCoy) seem to be a decent choice, but it's a shame there aren't any more female lead characters since my wife and daughter may both want to play. The expansion will add Checkov, Sulu, and Scotty. All strong characters but no more females. 3. A shame there aren't a bunch of redshirts and Klingons in the set. Not for the game, but so that I could create some RPG scenarios and would have some little guys to battle with. Same for the starships -- one Enterprise and one Klingon battlecruiser aren't enough for me to play with outside of the game. 4. Speaking of Enterprise and Klingons -- interesting that the set is supposed to be the new movie characters instead of the TOS characters, but there aren't any Klingons in the movie. Hmmmm. 5. Too early to know if the game will be fun or not. I'm still removing plastic from the cards, etc.

Employees at my FLGS report that the game is hot, and they are already having tournaments and stuff. I may wait it out for a little while longer for there to be several expansions available. It would be nice if Chapel were available to play, for sure, and in general it seems like it needs more options than what the base game provides. Frankly, I’ve already got my hands full with Federation Space and Star Fleet Battles (plus non-Trek gaming). I still consider it a higher priority to track down a copy of Star Explorer!

My family & have had a lot of fun with this over the summer and fall. You play one or more characters, each with varying abilities. The Enterprise is over a planet in crisis, and a Klingon ship is closing fast!
The characters beam down (or stay on the ship) to flip cards that reveal challenges. Some of them are trouble, some of them advance one of three story tracks. A challenge is defeated by piling up modifiers to a die roll== mods can come from the specific character, or the NPC crew cards that can be attached to each of the four main characters. Once the challenge is defeated, you might gain points on the three story tracks. A time track, or too much damage to the Enterprise, or wiping out on points, will end the game on you.
The Klingon-Enterprise combat is handled in the same manner: pile up modifiers, roll the dice, see whose firepower overcomes shields to inflict damage.
Both characters and ships take damage by clicking the base-- if you've played any kind of 'click game, you know what I mean.
It's pretty fun, we've gotten to where we can beat the game on the basic setting, so it's time to move on to the medium setting for us.
I hear the expansion will add more characters, like Scotty and Sulu, but I've not heard that it will add a new story/episode/planet. While the current game is replayable through the use of shuffled challenge cards, if I'm plunking down money, I want to see another planet!

Update: I got the expansion for my birthday last week. It's 3 figures, their card/special ability, and permission to play with 5 people, vice 4.
Meh. It's still stuck on one planet, and the same (slightly variable) mission.

I found a fan-made alternate mission on Boardgamegeek here. IT only replaces the story progress, not the cards that are flipped over to forward the story. I've yet to play with it, but that may change soon. Edit: Played the new cards yesterday, they worked pretty well. The hard part is that when we played for the first time in 2+ years, we re-learned that the Klingon ship is tough to beat! We had lousy luck shooting back (rolled a lot of 1s for the Enterprise), and that cost us the game.
