NOTE: This is not Star Fleet Battles! This is a card-based starship combat game by the same folks that made SFB. I was thinking of buying one online and wondered if anyone had played it. I notice that Boardgame Geek seems to rate it low, only 6 out of 10 stars, but I was hoping to find a fast-paced starship game that "the family" can play easily. Any info would be appreciated.

Not...not SFB? (sob) Short of drilling some holes into my SFB models for little red pegs to fit in and using the old Battleship game, this seems like a pretty interesting idea . Although, if you really want a two-D experience, you can always adapt SFB to Battleship using this. Ciao! Grendelwulf

Here is additonal info from Wikipedia on Star Fleet Battle Force: And the game looks like this:

Hmmm. Not quite sure how this card game and Battleship tie in togerher. apples & oranges... two different things, although they can both be found in your local market's produce section... I was reminded of Battleship because it was an ol' family game that was pretty simple in concept. It was "hit or miss". This card game sounds interesting. I may just order one myself, as I see it mentions they do have rules for a "solitaire" version too. Ciao! Grendelwulf

The game is a Star Trek version of the old card game Naval War. For those that haven't played it, you have a few ship cards on the table. Then you have a hand of cards. You can use the cards to attack your enemy. In the Naval War game, your card may be Torpedo or 16" gun and you can only play the attack cards if you have a ship with that weapon. In the Star Trek version, your cards are things like Phaser or Plasma or Drone. You can only play the attack card if one of your ships on the table has that particular weapon.
I liked Naval War, it was a fun multiplayer game similar is tone to Nuclear War.

Sounds like a fun "beer & pretzels" style game, where my family could play it without having to be as fanatic a Trek fan as I am.
I think I'm going to buy a copy and see how it looks in person.

I have it, I like it, it's fun.
It's slightly more complex than Naval War, more akin to Modern Naval Battles/Cold War Naval Battles.
The damage tracking on card with markers is a significant improvement over the use of the damage cards in NW/MNB/CWNB.

You can only fire from a given ship if you have ammo for it.

Yes, BB, it's a star Trek version of Naval War. There's a ship's deck, and an actions deck with Phasers, Torpedoes, Drones, Repair, ECM, Fighters, Weasels...
Actually, it's closer to Modern Naval Battles, because the ships are not destroyed outright, but have a damaged state.

I've taught it to some folks who later compared it to STAR REALMS, if that's of any help. Fun game, and great for old-school SFB fans who don't have 16 hours to play a game right now.

If you've played the old Avalon Hill Naval War or 3W's Modern Naval Battles (or its freeware rerelease Cold War Naval Battles, this is smack dab between MNB and NW. Unlike MNB or NW, it's damage to components rather than flat hit points, but still... the detail level is low, the deck is too thick, and the replay is... meh. It's about small fleet engagements, not ship duels. It plays in about an hour. Missing a bunch of races. Doesn't scratch the ship combat itch for me. Best thing about it is the pretty pictures.
