I am a fan of roleplaying. My primary background is in Gary Gygax’s Original Dungeons & Dragons and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, First Edition. I have had enough experience with skill-based games to know that I don’t much care for them.
I am a fan of Star Trek. My primary background is in Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Animated Series. I have enough experience with the movies and the other shows to know that I don’t much care for them.
The goal of this board, then, should be pretty clear. It’s a narrow focus, but I hope there are some who would like to share this journey with me. Let’s pretend it’s the 1970s, roleplaying is still new exciting, and Star Trek is still all about fighting evil Klingons and romancing beautiful aliens on exotic red planets!
To put it less poetically, it’s not really that we’re pretending it’s the 1970s so much as that we’re applying all we’ve learned from studying what the “Old School” is all about in order to create a Star Trek experience that feels right.
Anyway, enjoy!

Well, gee, how can I NOT join a forum like this?

Okay, a few changes. I split the main board into two, one for general discussion, and the other specifically for links and resources which should be pretty self-explanatory. I also added two boards dedicated to games I’d like to focus in on. If you can convince me to add more, maybe I will. No matter what, this forum is not about any particular game system.
Hope you’re having fun!

This just fills me with all sorts of glee, especially after reliving a few Saturday mornings with the Christmas gift of the TAS DVD set.

I'm glad you put this together. I've been a Trek fan from even before I knew what OD&D was, which is an exceptionally long time.
Is it acceptable to discuss the new J.J. Abrahms Star Trek, or is the focus TOS only?

The focus is TOS and TAS. I think everyone here is united by their love for TOS in particular. That being the case, I see no reason to declare any other Trek to be officially off-limits, whether it be TNG or any of its spin-offs, or the old movies, or the new movie. Let me put it this way: they are off-topic but not off-limits. I hope that makes sense. I don’t think I need to get more dogmatic about it than that. (Not yet?)
The question also came up elsewhere about whether the FASA Star Trek RPG is off-topic. No, of course not. Fasa Trek dwarfs all the other RPGs, published and unpublished, just in sheer amount of content. While it is not of the vintage I’m personally aiming for, it is yet venerable in its own right. I would be a fool to declare it off-topic. In terms of a rule set, I’m more looking for (or aiming to build) a real simple one with 3d6 ability scores and classes (say), rather than one with percentile skills all over the place; but I realize that’s largely just a sort of cosmetic preference which doesn’t even affect most of what we talk about here. Anyway, in terms of modules, FASA is basically “the only game in town”.
Hopefully that works for everyone!

Yes it does... perhaps just like OD&D and K&K has an "everything else" forum, you'd want to focus on the TOS/TAS series, but have outlets for other series.

Cool. I approve of a TOS-heavy Trek board. Definitely going to hang out here more often. Feels weird to have a sub-board with a game I wrote...almost like a Twilight Zone episode or something.

Feels weird to have a sub-board with a game I wrote...) Just downloaded version 2.0 and an reading through the file. It's pretty neat so far. I've only tinkered a little with MicroLite and am not much of a d20 system guy, but this seems pretty light-weight overall. I'll give you an EXALT for doing it!

Thanks for creating this board, Falconer. Nice to see some roleplaying love for TOS and TAS.

No love for TOS based movies? Okay, yeah, Five was terrible, as was that crossover with that other ST show, but man...Wrath of Khan ranks right up there! And I thought The Undiscovered Country was a great send-off, I thought. But of course, I won't make a thing out of it if they're totally off limits.

I'm TOS Trekker and RPGer for over 30 years so how can I not join in on an old school Trek RPG discussion? I've owned and played all the Trek RPGS except the latest CODA one. To be honest if I was to RPG trek today I would not use any of them. I'd use an adaptation of Chaosium's Basic Roleplaying probably something close to Call of Cthulhu with percentile skills. If I had to pick an off the shelf RPG, the newest Mongoose version of Traveller would probably do pretty well too.

@falconer: "May the Great Bird of the Galaxy bless your planet"
This is a very fine site you have here. It makes a nice alternative to the "Old School" fantasy RPG sites...

Thanks! I added a board dedicated to ship-to-ship combat. That is, for discussing both wargames and space battles within the context of a RPG. It seemed logical to group these popular topics together. Enjoy! I’ve been struggling with how to answer this. I have stated earlier in this thread that NOTHING is “totally off limits”. However, as moderator it falls to me to set the tone for this board, even if I am hesitant to make “hard rules” to enforce it. So I guess I had better get over myself and tell you what I really think. I dislike Star Trek: The Motion Picture with a passion, and I consider it the official end of Old School Trek. (TAS, while not THE Trek the way TOS is, more or less continues in the TOS tradition without really changing much, which is why it is admitted.) Anyone may agree or disagree, but for the purposes of this forum, that is not the Trek that this forum is about. I am considerably more lenient towards The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock, The Voyage Home, and The Undiscovered Country, which I consider a nice miniseries that bookends the story just fine. (I even included Saavik on my Enterprise NCC-1701 Personnel thread.) They are good stories. That said, TOS is the “era” and the format under consideration. I hope that doesn’t alienate anyone. I just feel if everyone knows and accepts the limits right from the get-go, there is a lot less chance of hurt feelings down the road, and the forum will run a lot more smoothly. Regards.
