Yeah. Pretty sure I’ll stick to the old school rules, and just adapt whatever Modiphius puts out. Unless/until they come out with some sort of TOSish core product which really appeals to me.
Aramis, can you start a thread about “Pendragonized FASA Trek”? I’m intrigued!

Yeah, man, I am huge into Star Trek at the moment, and I was curious to see what kind of discussion I could get there. So I’m thinking of making a player’s book on my own, and it would be either based on Star Trek: Adventure Gaming in the Final Frontier or Modiphius’s Star Trek Adventures (TOS-icized). I like a lot of the stuff in “Beyond the Final Frontier” and I am interested in the stuff in The Lucanii Drift. But as for STAGFF vs STA as base, well, I don’t know, I would like to use STA because of all the adventures it has, but I get a thrill from STAGFF because of all the pure TOS/TAS basis. I suppose I could prepare a hybrid which is STA but with all the flavor of STAGFF. (Or STAGFF with the numbers adjusted to STA standards.) STAGFF works well as a short guide for what to include in a pre-movies game, and with what sort of attitude. I'm not sure how much STAGFF flavor you could inject into STA, but I haven't yet looked at STA so closely that I can recognize where the seams lie to allow house ruling for playing a different way. What I would probably do is take either system I felt would garner enough interested players for my own purposes, stripped to naught but the generic mechanical concepts; and then rebuild everything back in using the 1975 Technical Manual and Bjo Trimble's 1976 Concordance as the only direct primary sources. That should successfully TO/AS-ify any game system you like. I could even see a good OD&D setting being made out of that.

Any chance we could get this thread renamed? Something with "Modiphius" in the title?

Done! But soon I’m going to start a new thread for my Player’s Handbook.

Looking forward to the new thread and PH info. I had just gotten tired of seeing a thread from months ago suggesting a "new" RPG which has been out for a while now. Thanks for the re-name.

(1) I bought the PDFs for the starter set, and there is a version which is much easier to read. (2) I still haven't played the game; I'm sort of hoping that someone near me will run the thing so that I can play a few games before I try to run one. Pretty much anything 2d20 would be a nice start … Trek, John Carter, Conan … anything to give me a better feel for the mechanics in actual play. (3) Falconer has put in an appearance on the Modiphius boards, so there are at least three of us there. Finn, I'd be happy to run something using the 2D20 system. IT has become my Trek system, I don't believe we are far apart but with the pandemic rules in place I could run something message board style for you. I could run it here for anyone interested.

My first play by post game in three years launched over the weekend. The year is 2371 and this is the first mission for the USS Odyssey a Intrepid Class Starship. Yep sheis named after the Odyssey lost in the Gamma Quadrant in 2370. I have six players and so far a slow start but I am excited about this. Assigned to a border station near Breen space...we will see what fun ensues.

Having bought half the sourcebooks... it's truly focused on the TNG era. Note that DIS, Picard, and JJTrek are all off-limits... there's not a lot of support for TOS era.
It has several TOS Era ships, tho' - including the Constitution and Hermes classes.

You are correct though that the license doesn't cover the DIS, JJ or Picard eras...though with some of the fan stuff out there...not hard to do. Let's be honest if you are just sticking to the TOS era we only saw the Connies on TV, TMP era is well represented as well with the upgraded Connie, Excelsior and Miranda classes...

Having the ships ≠ supporting the setting. All the organizational elements are focused upon the TNG/DS9/Voy era. All the maps are that same era. Most of the gear is presented only in the TNG forms.
WIth the quadrant books, it's better... but it's still not good.
And it does TOS a lot better than it does Enterprise... where there are only a handful of ships... counting the hostiles.

That’s a great thing about using truly old school game materials and source materials, is that it’s the TOS universe on its own terms, not through the lens of the later franchise.

I am going to politely disagree with you, and I respect your opinion. Enjoy Star Trek gaming with any system you like as long as it's Star Trek I'm just happy to see it being supported again.

I haven't read the sourcebooks or published rules, so I can't say one way or the other about that. I do remember having a conversation with Modiphius folks at a game show a few years ago in the UK, back when they were pushing for beta testers and handing out free captain minis to anyone who signed up. I came away from the conversation with the feeling that they weren't very interested in TOS at all, except as minis (though they were clear up front that the TNG minis would take priority). For the game itself, they seemed to equate TOS with TMP. So the conversation went a bit like, "Yeah, we'll totally be supported TOS era! We've got ship stats for the Miranda-class and everything."
Obviously things could have changed very much since the start of the beta, but I regret that this first impression did keep all but the potential minis off my radar, even though I did sign up for the beta and perused a few of the adventures as they trickled in.
I don't blame them for it though, it's actually good business. They know exactly which of the shows and movies will sell as games, and which will sell as minis, and they're hitting those markets shrewdly. People are more likely to want TOS minis than TMP minis, and people are more likely to want TMP setting than TOS setting. 1990s Trek will always trump both of them by an order of magnitude or three, and ENT might as well be a money pit.
Personally, I'm quite happy with my small set of 1970s Star Trek fact books. They are finite, manageable, sparse, and perfectly system neutral.

I'm just happy that people can find a game today. I've seen every iteration of Star Trek RPG come and go. I am a huge fan and supporter of the 2d20 rules but that doesn't mean I don't like FASA or LUG or Decipher or hell Starships and Spacemen or FARTrek. Far Trek was my go to game before 2d20 came out...I have been with it since being a Beta Tester and like it a lot.
I know I can loot what I want from any source and use it in whatever game I am running. I have used 2d20 to run the crew of my Constitution Class and Archer class ships...I am running two games aboard Intrepid Class ships right now as well.
I just love Star Trek gaming!
