I just wish I had a better understanding of how 2d20 plays, and it's a little frustrating that every game has a slightly different version of the 2d20 core rules. Names change for the same concept (momentum or doom or whatever) and the fact that some versions use skills while others don't. Stuff like that makes it hard to learn "the 2d20 system" for a newbie because it's confusing just to be confusing.

I have to be honest I don't want to learn any of the other 2d20 systems, I only really care about this one. IT is similar to Free Leagues approach to their games. Alien is different from Coriolis and Forbidden Lands is also different from John Carter of Mars.

At last they have announced a TOS version of the Star Trek Adventures Core Rulebook! This set looks sweet, though hopefully they make the rulebook available standalone, otherwise it’s going to be a lot of extra expense per player.

Now THAT is a boxed set that I can appreciate! (Still not so sure about the rules, but I am a lot more motivated to learn the rules when it's TOS based. The other rules sets just feel so TNG-ish and all...) I will admit that the green dice threw me for a bit. Then I saw in the advertisement that they are "Captain Kirk shirt green" which is sort of funky because most of the time his shirt looks more tan to me than green, but he does have one version (the deep v-neck one) which is clearly green so I guess it's okay.

I've run Star Trek Adventures several times. Star Trek Adventures is (as presented in the 1st Edition core rulebook) a great set of rules presented very poorly. Read more on my opinion on this here: dicehaven.com/star-trek/homebrewing-a-star-trek-game/I'm hoping the Rules Digest will be a clean-up of the rules. If so I could totally see diving back in! I had also looked at their boxed set which has a quick-start. The quick-start rules are a nicer presentation of the rules but you still needed to buy the core rules (which all its chaotic presentation) to play a long term campaign. So, I'm holding out hope! But, I'm also not holding my breath. I'm working on my custom Star Trek rules which I should be able to share as a Beta version within the month. :-)

I’m very happy with my homebrew (basically STAGFF for characters and S&S for ships), but this product appeals to me, and based on what I know about it I will certainly buy it and take it for a whirl. I do hope the rules digest here is more comprehensive than the one from the Starter Set, i.e., playable standalone in the long term.

I share your hopes! :-)
Maybe whoever buys it first could review it on the forums here.

I asked some questions over at the Modiphius forums. The good news is that the ruleset is indeed the complete rules. The downside, at least for me, is that it’s “not specifically focused on the Original Series” but rather “on the Original Series era (key difference there)… Can’t please everyone.” I’m not exactly sure how much this scornful attitude is likely to affect my appreciation of the product, but it doesn’t seem calculated to win my business.

Hmm, I guess "Original Series era" would be geared to also cover the newly licensed by Modiphius Discovery series as well as the upcomimg Pike "Strange New Worlds" series.

The digest is going to be 304 pages. That's pretty thick for a digest sized book!

Ah! I read through the Modiphius thread here: forums.modiphius.com/t/original-series-tricorder-set/13659Sounds like they locked down the design many weeks ago. Likely they have it being printed / produced in China and they are saying Q3 deliver to account for production time and being shipped from overseas. Races in the TOS rulebook will be Humans, Andorians, Tellarites, Vulcans, Denobulans, and Trills. That's OK by me; when I've run Star Trek Adventures my players always like multiple species options. Easy to say "no Denobulans or Trills", and there are dozens and dozens of other races which STA fans have built out on the forums which you can use. Bigger thing to me is how much they've cleaned up the core rules presentation -- they say they are improved, and I hope that is true. :-)

Reading through the thread, the impression I got is that this edition of the rulebook is just the same content as the original rulebook (but with the updated core rules changes from subsequent publications), but with the layout gimmick changed from a TNG/LCARS aesthetic to a TOS/Jefferies aesthetic. So whatever is in the old rulebook, including races and equipment, will likely be in the new rulebook.
It looks beautiful and an excellent mood setting table piece, but unfortunately I'll have to pass. I have no doubt that it will be far too expensive for me to justify buying it, when I already enjoy several other rules for Star Trek that I don't get to play as much as I'd like; and when at this stage in life I would only be interested in getting new material for TOS, and not TOS-era-within-larger-canon; and when I have an already too long wishlist of other expensive hobby items that I will probably use more frequently.

I share your sentiment, Starbeard, but at the same time I find that the current products just look too TNG for me. At least with a focus on the TOS era (and I assume the “not specifically focused on the Original Series” part is because they have their own USS Lexington plotline that they are doing) and as long as the graphics look TOS and not TNG that is a huge selling point for me. Heck, I would have been happy with a Starter Set which was graphically altered to be more TOS even if they didn't change a word of the content.

Yeah, I see both sides. I love the TOS aesthetic and I want to reward the company for doing something like this. But I spend so much money on RPG stuff that I *actually* use, and it makes me try to avoid spending money on stuff that I don’t actually need. That said, if there are modules in the set, I guess I have to get it!
