Posted a reply on the blog you linked to. In short, Axanar screwed over every other Star Trek fan film production by trying to profit from an IP that wasn't theirs to profit from. UPDATE: Since the blog author is apparently moderating my posts, here is the full discussion, including what you can't see from his site. For anyone not wishing to read the PDF below, the profit issue was brought up, the author asked the person bringing up the profit issue what made him say that, followed by my responses which go into more detail on the profit issue. If it hadn't been Axanar, it would have been someone else.
Cawley was approaching the visual quality of the remastered TOS. But the acting quality was ... not anywhere near as good as his visual effort. No threat to paramount.
And let's not forget Renegades - while not as good on the visuals as what it was clearly emulating, the acting was up to par.
Neither was up to "serious threat to upcoming series" - but Axanar was. And further, Axanar directly overlapped the intended time zone - the Discovery timeframe was leaked in 2015. Axanar was targeted in 2016, and is still in the future for Discovery. Cawley and Russ didn't set in the timeframe CBS/Paramount were targeting. Axanar was.

Your main point, that if it wasn't them it would be someone else, I don't have an argument with. Nor do I have an argument regarding the quality of the visuals in both New Voyages/Phase II and Star Trek Continues. But you do make a good point about the time frame, based upon the uniforms having the appearance of the ones from The Cage.
My main beef with his blog, besides the fact he chose to hide posts, is the fact he ignored the contributory copyright infringement claim because it didn't fit his narrative.

Starship Exeter is my favorite fan series. I don’t love prequels, and I like a minimum of callbacks and cameos to TOS, and I think the idea of a new crew of a new ship is superior to continuing the Enterprise mission through recasting.
