The wife and I are watching DS9. We're just into season four and plan on plowing through all seven. I know that I like TOS better than the TNG-DS9-Voy era because I like the ships better in TOS, I like having Klingons as bad guys, and so forth. At the same time, I have to say that I'm enjoying the Cardassians and Ferengi and the fact that DS9 is a frontier outpost in the middle of nowhere.
So I wondered if I could somehow combine the best parts of each into one campaign.
How about this: consider a TOS-era game, perhaps in the first season of TOS. At the same time, in a far corner of the galaxy, our heroes might encounter a frontier space station. I like the Franz-Joseph model of the Trek universe (and the hex map from FEDERATION SPACE) so I guess I might have to place this thing somewhere to the "North" region, which is open and unconnected to other empires. That puts the Kzinti near the Cardassians instead of the Klingons, but maybe there could be a treaty that allows Klingons to travel through Kzinti space. Or maybe I ignore the LYRAN SPACE supplement to FEDERATION SPACE and allow the Klingon Empire to wrap around a smaller Kzinti nation. Not so sure, but you get the idea.
So I imagine TOS-era Federation ships travelling to this frontier region. It's in Cardassian space, or perhaps inside a Neutral Zone but near Cardassian space. The station is around Bajor and is known as Bajor-1. It's a brand-new station, run by Cardassians, and is one of the ways that the Cardassians keep the Bajorans enslaved. (Recall that Bajor would be a slave world of the Cardassian Empire for nearly a century since it was recently freed in the DS9 show.)
I'd like to steal the TOS concept that there are only a dozen or so Heavy Cruisers in the Federation, so losing one is a Big Deal. Many of the ships travelling from one place to another would be smaller Gunships, Scouts, or Destroyers. I'd probably lean on the Star Trek Technical Manual (Franz Joseph) for inspiration on this part of the Federation. In the same way, the Klingons would have very few C2 or C3 cruisers, a few more D4 or D5 destroyers, and a decent number of E escort ships. Star Fleet Battles would probably help me with this stuff.
So our heroes would probably be crew in a Enterprise-like Heavy Cruiser. Not the Enterprise, probably, because that crew is too well known and would steal the thunder from our heroes if they were on the same ship. But they could still move around to battle Klingons, have espionage with the Romulins, deal with Cardassians at the frontier space station, and so forth.
I know it's not exactly "canon" as Kirk-era characters wouldn't have encountered Cardassians and the like, but it would allow me to blend the best of each together. And do so in a ship where gold means Command and "redshirt" means "you gonna die."
Thoughts? Anything to add?
