Hey, contemplating doing a mini/side-campaign where the PCs are free traders. Trying to think what would be a cool ship for them. The TAS designs and the FASA designs don’t inspire me. I kind of think it should be bigger than the Millennium Falcon or Serenity. This is Star Trek.
1. Romulan Bird of Prey - a kickass design, and I don’t expect to be running a Romulan campaign at any point. And it has blueprints. Not very trader-ish, though; definitely has a military submarine feel.
2. Federation Ptolemy-class Transport/Tug - great Franz Joseph design that I am not otherwise using (not heroic enough for my main Starfleet campaign)
3. Federation Anton-class Light Cruiser - similar to the above (it’s TWOK’s Reliant TOS-icized), not sure which I like better
In each of the above situations, the PCs would have to be pirates or mutineers, right? The Romulans nor the Federation would sell their ships, even their junkers, would they?
4. Kzinti Police Cruiser - okay, I lied, there is a TAS design I like. I kept thinking, if they’re going to be pirates, why not Orion Pirates? But the Orion designs (TAS, SFU, FASA, TOS-R) are not to my liking. I was just imagining “Traitor’s Claw”, so, maybe I’ll go with that. Let the players pick their own color scheme.
Hmm…

Why dont you let the players design one themselves? Or pick a design from the internet and make the appropriate game adjustments?
I was never a fan of the trek verse civilian ship offerings...they were either too kitbashy or dull creatively.
Just my 2 quatloos...

Have you ever looked through ship designs from the Traveller RPG? A lot of those look great with some warp pods sticking out...

I think that grabbing the Serenity or the Millennium Falcon could work just fine, even though they may be "crossover" ships. The advantage to those would be that the players would be somewhat familiar with the capabilities and size/resources of the ship, although how you deal with them in the ST universe could still be a surprise. "Oh, hey, those quad-gun batteries don't seem to punch through military shields at all, do they?" So using those ships could have certain advantages in familiarity while providing some uncertainty in encounters.
On the other hand, having an old refurbished Romulan "Bird of Prey" could make for a classic campaign. The characters might get the idea of trying to fix up the plasma torpedo technology or maybe try to get the cloaking device working again. Awesome if they can do it, but it may be hard to find Romulan contacts willing (or able) to work on the broken tech. Also, wandering through Federation space in an old Romulan ship might make for all sorts of interesting situations.

The one that’s really growing on me is the Surya class frigate. Not the least because it has actual deckplans (the TWoK-era Avenger class, what TNG calls Miranda class). Jim of JBOT Decals will be making TOS-era deckplans. However, it looks like he may eventually do the Ptolemy class transport, too.
