I once read somewhere Franz Joseph’s ideas for a Star Trek sequel series which would be “about” Starfleet, i.e. it would feature lots of ships rather than one. I queried his daughter, Karen, about this, and here is what she said:

That could have been awesome. Similarly, I thought Stargate should have continued as an anthology series with different SG teams and different planets. FJD's blueprints and the StarFleet Tech Manual sparked fans' imagination back in the '70s. They were critical to early fans and the formation of clubs. Without FJ explicitly opening up the universe of Trek beyond the Enterprise I don't think we'd have the ongoing franchise we have today.

Totally agree that back in the 70's and early 80's, inbetween infrequent tv reruns and occasional films, the FJ Tech Manual (and the original Spaceflight Chronology, FASA game, SFB, Pocket Books & various "making of" books) WERE ST for so many. For me this was canon, and I have been increasingly disappointed as more recent incarnations of ST have steered so far from more happy days. YMMV.
