Something that TOS/TAS never really did was look at the Federation from the viewpoint of the rest of the galaxy - what they thought of this "grand alliance of diverse species & cultures".
DS9 did that regularly... perhaps never better than this one scene that was originally intended as "filler" when the director & producers thought they would be a little short in time filmed for their script for an episode.
It was supposed to be a bit of light comedy... but:
The actors, being REAL actors, saw the potential for something more meaningful and deep, and insisted on also being allowed to film it "once, they way we want to do it".
The PTBs saw the take and agreed to drop the comedic version, and when they realized that the episode would now actually run over on time, gave in to the actors' insistence on preserving the scene, and cut elsewhere.
Thus we have perhaps the deepest and best scene in all versions of Trek!
Kudos to Armin Shimerman and Andrew Robinson!

I’m not really familiar with DS9, but I did recently read The Final Reflection and have run some of the Klingon modules that came out at the same time. (My players all read the novel, too.) It really is as great a novel as people say, and it really expands the horizons of Star Trek beyond the Federation viewpoint. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

John Ford created a masterpiece there - as an aside he solved how Spock could be born at all, etc. It was just to make the novel fit into both TOS and TMP universes, but became so much more. Of course, he could have made the genetic engineering a wholly Klingon science, but sliding in the Vulcans was just by far better. It is perhaps my favorite ST novel - but The Romulan Way (and the associated novels) are not far behind, with Diane Duane doing for those misfit ex-Vulcans what Ford did for the Klingons. She did carry it too far in the last two novels*, the best are the first two, in my view. I really wish that they would have used her version of Romulus/Remus etc for TNG & the movies. * there were supposed to be four novels, but the publishers split the third into two, making five overall. I still consider those to be one story. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_Rihannsu

I’m not really familiar with DS9, OK, you probably know some of this, but... DS9 is a former Cardassian station, originally built to control the Bejor system after Cardassia occupied the system (they never bothered to conquer Bejor itself). After Bejor was able to kick the Cardassians out (with help), The Federation was given control of the station to act as a buffer between the two enemies. The station is located near a wormhole, which is frequently used to enable travel betweer galaxies - in later seasons there is even an invasion launched into Federation/Bejoran space via the wormhole! Quark owns a bar/recreation facility in DS9, set up during the Cardassian period. He really did more-prosperous business under the Cardassians, but manages to keep things together under Federation oversight. His nephew eventually enlists in Starfleet, attending the Academy! Garak is a former member of Cardassian Intelligence, and is there in exile as a tailor, running his own shop. Ironically, he is actually a better tailor than spy, as his loyalties soon become muddled, sometimes deciding what to do based on the good of DS9 over that of Cardassia!

And from a Klingon perspective, this line from the Day of the Dove:- MARA: "What will they do to us? I've heard of their atrocities, their death camps. They will torture us for our scientific and military information". I would like to hope that this is just propaganda or judging by their own standards?? But, for me, the best example of this topic still has to be "The Final Reflection", as has already been mentioned. The transporter demonstration and the discussion around prisoners have got to be the best imho.
