My wife and I are working through a viewing of the DS9 series and I got to the episode "Trials and Tribble-ations" and it's my favorite DS9 episode of all time. Years ago I bought a special set with this episode and the original "Trouble with Tribbles" in VHS video and it came with an actual tribble. I'm sure I have it somewhere. If any fans of TOS haven't seen this DS9 episode you really have to track it down. (It's season 5, episode 6 of DS9.) The gist of it is that some of the crew of DS9 end up on the original Enterprise during the episode "Trouble with Tribbles" and they have done some fancy camera work to insert the characters into some of the scenes of the original. Fun to watch, then watch the original episode again to see which parts got changed. In other tribble news, if you root about on www.modiphius.net/collections/star-trek-adventures/star-trek-adventures_pdf?page=1 you can find a free PDF of a tribble character race you can play for the 2d20 Star Trek Adventures game. That's pretty cool, right?

I love "Trials and Tribble-lations". I was not a fan of DS9 in general, and didn't watch much at all after the first few episodes. But that episode is technically impressive and a heck of a lot of fun!

By the way, Fin, I was reviewing old Troll Lord C&C posts, and realized you were there when I shared my C&C Conan conversion. Small world.

Maybe small world, or maybe we just share a love of the same kinds of stuff. I playtested C&C back in the day and for a while I played the heck out of the system. If I remember correctly, the C&C boards are now on their 3rd version -- they had one which had black background and Egyptian-looking symbols on it (around the time of the playtest, I think) and then another one which was blue and then the current one. Too bad some of the old threads got lost along the way, particularly some of the brainstorming during playtest. A lot of cool ideas were tossed around back then. My group has mostly moved on to 5E now, but I still have a shelf full of C&C stuff (along with Amazing Adventures in both C&C and 5E format). I remember your C&C Conan, but am not 100% certain if I can still find it on one of my old computers. You did great work on that one!

Yeah, I've moved on to 5e, the left that behind and primarily play B/X. I'm waiting to run a one shot of Far Trek or after my co-DM's campaign start an OD&D+Greyhawk campagin.

A few months ago, I watched “The Trouble with Tribbles” (TOS), “More Tribbles, More Troubles” (TAS), and “Trials and Tribble-ations” (DS9), as well as ran the module “Again, Troublesome Tribbles” (FASA). And of course did a podcast review. Unfortunately, where the original shines, the rest are all nostalgia-fests which fall flat, IMO.
I will say the DS9 episode is a technical masterpiece, and is worth watching for that element alone. Obviously a LOT of work went into it, and very little suspension of disbelief is required—you really feel like they have gone back in time and are there in the world of TOS. However, as a story it really has very little going for it beyond fangasm moments. And it REALLY doesn’t sell me on DS9. I found the aesthetics of the sets and costumes in the “present” of DS9 to be surprisingly bland and generic, and the performances by all the DS9 regulars were shockingly muted and even unlikable, especially the captain. You’d think they’d at least try to make him look kind of good next to Shatner, but he turns in a downright sleepy performance. (And he couldn’t shave?) The only character who doesn’t seem to be phoning it in is Jadzia Dax—she steals the scene.
That said, I do love this episode, and it’s truly the sole example of the franchise truly revisiting the world of TOS. Kind of shocking, if you think about it.
