Am I the only one annoyed with that phrase? In TOS the Klingons had the C and D class cruisers and the Romulans had the "bird of prey" ship. I know that the Klingons and Romulans had some sort of treaty where they shared technology, but it seems like the Klingons got the cloaking device and the "bird of prey" name and the Romulans got nothing. I seem to recall games like Federation Space and Star Fleet Battles using bird names to represent the Romulan ship classes. The Klingons were all letter designations. (B10 battlecruiser, C8 and C9 cruisers, D6 and D7 destroyers, F4 and F5 frigates, and G1 through G3 gunships, if my memory serves me correctly.) Part of what I liked about TOS was that each race had some stereotypes that made them different from the others. Klingons were violent dudes who were quick to anger, and their ships had "glass shields" in the back to discourage retreat. Romulans were sneaky and stealthy sort-of-emotional-Vulcan types with sort of a Roman culture of conquest. Andorians were ... well, blue guys with antennae and not much known about them, but you get the idea. Having Klingon ships called a bird of prey ruins part of that for me. Okay, rant over. Discuss.

The bad guys in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock have a cloaking Bird of Prey because they were originally Romulans in the script, and the change to Klingons was made rather late. But yeah, I agree, I mostly stick with the Klingon D7 and the Romulan Warbird.

Yeah, Klingon Bird of Prey is a thing from the 80s movies. I also like the TOS thinking that had the BoP as Romulans only, and the "Klingon Cruiser" was Klingon, and later provided to the Romulans. Like Falconer said, they frick'd up the script and changed out Roms for Klings, but kept the Rom ship...

Totally agree. Romulan ships "painted like a giant bird of prey" as the Balance of Terror quote. Klingon ships with boom and main hull, as D7. My personal take is that BoP had limited and fuel draining fusion powered warp (as Scott's "simple impulse" line), which was totally outmatched by the M/AM Enterprise in BoT. And so Romulans bought, or via a limited alliance (enemy of my enemy..... etc), exchanged some older D7's from the Klingons (so in The Enterprise incident). I personally don't acknowledge the ST111 (and onwards) BoP design. No warp nacelles, massive guns, and looking more like one of IL&M's designs for another scifi series set "in a galaxy far far away". Ymmv.

Too bad 90% of the photos are unviewable.

Too bad 90% of the photos are unviewable. Yeah I know what you mean. I just agreed with the descriptions and the few pictures that can be seen.

Agreed; I assume "Bird of prey" is the Klingons' class name for that small ship in STIII. A small raiding vessel, tricked out with Romulan tech. Perhaps it came as part of the swap that got the Romulans the cruisers seen in Enterprise Incident.
As a long-time Star Fleet Battles/Federation & Empire player, I have no problem with the Roms and Klingons swapping *some* ships. The Klinks were trying to build up the Roms as a second threat to the Federation, and it cost them a lot in game terms.

IIRC an earlier draft of the script had Kruge stealing a Romulan ship which was the Bird-of-Prey. He needed a ship with a cloaking device in order to complete his plans. The BoP was going to show up in Star Trek VI after being fished out of the San Fransisco Bay. Scotty was going to be teaching an engineering class at the academy with it.
FASA had multiple BoP stats because there were different size photos and descriptions. They even had a Romulan version of it.
