So, all you ST RPG GM's out there. What (and why) is your favourite PC ship class? Back in the 80's I ran several Starfleet campaigns with TOS Constitution/Starship class vessels, and a single Klingon campaign with a D7A. However, as I am increasingly interested in Pike (or pre-Pike) concepts and campaign ideas, I am now drawn to the Baton Rouge class from the original Spaceflight Chronology (as per attached file, below). To me the design is just ideal as the precursor to the Connie's, but a lot more rough & ready, blocky and old. It is the first UESPA ship with transporters, and the last before MAM "broke the time barrier" to deliver W5+. A much more hands on ship, and not as pretty as what was to follow on, some 20-30 years later. Anyway, t h at is my choice. What is yours? Attachments:

For my Far Trek one-shot (which may become a campaign), I gave the group a Hermes-class scout. It is a little lighter-weight than a Connie, with no photon torpedos and weaker shields. I don't want the group to consider fighting as their first option - which a Connie might encourage them to do.
Plus, if we do a campaign, I want to be able to reward them later on with a Connie...

I like using ships one step down from the Enterprise, at least for starting a campaign. Also, I'm a fan of not saving the whole galaxy every other episode, so smaller stakes work for me and my players.
My last Far Trek game was in a Saladin-class destroyer.
I'm also a Star Fleet Battles fan, I once wanted to run with a "police flagship"-- nearly all the varied capabilities of a Constitution-class cruiser-- even science, medical, and transporters-- but far less weaponry.

I love the Saladin class for a starting starship :-)

I am doing the classic FJ Hermes - Saladin - Constitution progression. I like it a lot. Starts small and more intimate and manageable, and the Constitution feels earned and welcome and epic. But it feels like Star Trek all along the way.

Definitely Hermes. Make it a ship they love and don't want to leave.

So, all you ST RPG GM's out there. What (and why) is your favourite PC ship class? New Light Cruiser (SFU) - full CA armament, 2/3 the power. Just enough science capability. 2nd choice: Galactic Survey Cruiser (also SFU). Light carrier, survey specialized. In screen canon, Reliant is close enough to the SFU NCL (which predates TWOK) and Grissom the GSC (again, predates SFS) that Paramount's claim of no knowledge looks like a bald-faced lie...

One of the next game ideas I'm contemplating would be to tweak the "Naval Adventure" series from Mongoose Traveller. Their default ship is a colonial cruiser that's come out of mothballs, for patrolling a not-frontier of the Imperium.
Referencing Star Fleet Battles again, that could be a Province-class "old light cruiser", or even a Republic-class OCA, that's been refitted and upgraded to contemporary technology... mostly.
