Just a question that has been bothering me and Falconer if you need to shut it down go ahead...
So what happened to the MACO?
We saw in Enterprise them working together with security...just curious what you guys here think.
Edit: Added OT (“off topic”) to the thread title. Go ahead and talk all you want about Enterprise here.

I'd say they just got folded into normal Starfleet security ("red shirts"). I don't recall Enterprise having much in the way of formal security personnel before the MACO's showed up--they struck me as much less of a military force and more a exploration/diplomatic focused ship.

I thought Reed was in charge of security before the MACOs came aboard...

He was also the guy who worked on the ship's weapons systems, though, wasn't he? I kinda always pictured him as an engineer who moved into a more soldier type field. He also didn't seem to have much in the way of staff early on.
Then again, it has been a few years since I've seen the early seasons...

I went to Memory Alpha and looked it up, he was officially the Armoury Officer.

Maybe the MACO could have become an organization like the Special Security Division from the non-canon novel Death's Angel. Or, a precursor to the Section 31 organization seen in later Trek stories. Ciao! Grendelwulf

Ah, that's right. Amoury Officer. Also, the official ship's anal retentive stiff. Or perhaps the MACO's stayed around, but as a separate military arm of Star Fleet that we never saw because the show's never showed military operation. Kind of like the Marines to Captain Kirk's Navy. You know, except for that early bit of season 2, I really liked that show. Too bad it got shafted later on--it was starting to get pretty good.

Back when it first came out, I got a group to get together to watch every week’s new episode. We got through probably the first six or so episodes, maybe less, before the group fell apart. I didn’t keep watching it after that for long, I guess just because I didn’t have my own cable at the time or something, or maybe I didn’t care. From what I remember of it, though, I liked it well enough. Not nearly as much as I like TOS, but, what can you expect?
Anyway, since I only saw the first season, I don’t know anything about MACOs. But it occurs to me that few purely human institutions survived the creation of the Federation, certainly nothing military! Regards.

I'd recommend picking it back up, if you get a chance. It's somewhat mediocre through the first season. Gets absolutely dreadful in the first 1/2 to 2/3's of the second season, then it picks up and ends season 2 with the World's Largest Cliffhanger. Season 3's pretty solid and season 4 is just flat out awesome, save the final episode, which I like to pretend never existed.

When DS9 started the Section 31 (or was it TNG?), it was sort of a step back from TOS universe.
TOS was supposed to be a closer to a utopian future where the Federation was supposed to beyond such organizations. They were the archetype heroes. You didn't have clandestine groups wielding unseen power behind the scenes. Ok, the occasional deluded starship captain (Garth), but mostly they were all above-board.
The role of a starship captain & crew was to be a mix of military leader and peace ambassador, which is part of what made the job so special. Secret police fell more to the tactics of Klingons & Romulans, etc.
Technically, it didn't since it was only a holographic study.

season 4 is just flat out awesome, save the final episode, which I like to pretend never existed. Agreed. The final 1.5 seasons of Enterrise are, in my opinion, some of the finest Trek ever. Too bad nobody was still around watching the show. The "mirror universe" episodes were fantastic! And the final episode was horrible. Worse than horrible. It ended with a cute twist (which I will admit was kind of clever, but I hated it because it took the stage totally away from the stars of the show) and let the whole series end on a down note.
