I was in the middle of running an adventure when I suddenly realized I really needed a planetary classification system. The show establishes only two types, Class M (“oxygen atmosphere” “close to Earth conditions”) and Class K (“adaptable for humans by use of pressure domes and life-support systems”). Star Fleet Handbook, Vol. 10 introduces a more fleshed out list of Types A-N. This was used in other TOS-based fan works, plus Star Trek Maps, FASA’s The Orions, and Worlds of the Federation (somewhat modified in the last). It’s a good start, but a little dry for a RPG. Starships & Spacemen, 2nd Edition includes a fantastic list of Types A-X which is just perfect for a RPG. However, its designations (deliberately) do not match with the Star Trek ones. For example, it has Class H as its “earthlike” class. Therefore, I have adapted it, moving the types around so that Classes A-N match the Star Trek Maps list reasonably closely (perhaps fudging it a little); Classes O-W are the “new” ones from S&S.

Ooh, I found a vintage source describing Class V planets! This is from White Dwarf #64, April 1985, in the scenario “Starfall” by Marcus L. Rowland: Based on this, I slightly updated my planet types. V, Venus-like, seems logical and easy to remember. And W for weird. Here is a table for if you are running The Lucanii Drift (or other S&S 2e material) and you want to convert its planet designations to my more TOS-like designations. S&S | TOS | Example Planet | A | C | Medusa IV | B | D | Excalbia | C | F | Delta Vega, Elba II | D | K | Camus II, Mars, Mudd | E | H | Gothos | F | G | Capella IV, Holberg 917G, Manark IV, Rigel XII | G | N | | H | M | Earth, Vulcan | I | T | J, K, L | B | Saturn | M | A | Jupiter | N | S | | O, P, Q | O, P, Q | | R | R | Talos IV
| S | E | Janus VI | T | L | Exo III, Psi 2000 | U | U | | V | W | | W | I | Ceres, Yonada | W | J | Luna, Memory Alpha, Mercury, Planet Q | X | V | Venus | Y, Z | X, Y, Z | |
